Prince Harry Does Jamaica

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Prince Harry’s recent trip to Jamaica has highlighted once again to the rest of the world how beautiful the island is. With its white sandy beaches, warm emerald blue seas and a climate that averages an impressive 27.10C (810F) all year round, it’s not hard to see why people keep coming back time and time again.

Although Jamaica’s royal visitor didn’t have time to visit the island’s premier eco-resort – Green Castle Estate in Robin’s Bay, if he had done, he’d have received a welcome fit for a Prince.  For your perfect Jamaican vacation, Green Castle offers sumptuous guest house or villa accommodation nestled amongst 1600 acres of lush Jamaican countryside.  Whether you’re looking for a relaxing family getaway in the sun or something more active, Green Castle caters to all tastes.  The eco-resort is also renowned for its abundance of birds, many of which are only found in Jamaica.  With over 20 miles of walking trails to explore, birding in Jamaica has never been easier.

Green Castle is the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of everyday life.  To find out more about staying at Green Castle, please complete the reservation inquiry form on our home page or alternatively call us on 1-876-881-6279.

The Jamaican Mahogany Tree at Green Castle Estate

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Directly outside the office, is a beautiful deciduous tree with seed pods closely resembling the naseberry fruit (botanical name sapodilla).  The resemblance is so close that visitors often come up to the office and ask if they can have a fruit to eat.  This tree is however, not a naseberry tree but a Jamaican Mahogany, commonly known as West Indian Mahogany.

It takes about 30 years to mature and grows up to 30 m.  The bark on small trees is grey and slightly fissured.  The wood is reddish or pinkish when freshly cut.  It is a moderately hard, heavy and strong wood.  It is also very resistant to wood termites and decay.

The wood is used mainly for furniture, cabinet making and interior veneers.  The wood of the Jamaican mahogany is considered superior in quality and durability compared to the wood of the Honduras mahogany commonly seen in most parts of Jamaica.

The Jamaican Mahogany is mainly found in western and central parishes, growing in pastures and along roadsides but rarely in natural forests.  They are found up to 900m above sea level.
